Not incentivized to join Threads. No to Mastadon, BlueSky, etc. I still like Twitter because nothing has changed. Not interested in arguing, nor churning my way to save money. I already have a full time job working from everywhere.

What keeps social media propped up is the general incompetence of the old mainstream media. Writers and podcasters are split between gaining readers/viewers and providing real information untrammeled by clickbait. The Threads meme is just one example. On the mainstream side is another headlong rush to justify a return to office and HR control of employees. When CNBC’s Jim Cramer grows hoarser you know that means he’s caught between his hopes and the forces in control of the market. On Thursday he accused people of not working at all on Fridays if they work from home, and predicted they soon would be “working from home Monday through Friday.” Laid off, incompetent and wrong? We’ll soon know.

I’ve cut back on Substack Notes in favor of restacking with a comment. A notification is sent to the creator of the referenced post. If they reply, I get a notification, and so on. The shift is away from recommending something be read, and toward establishing one-on-one relationships with specific people not themes. The Gillmor Gang Substack is available with a free subscription; we upgrade to a comp paid sub and turn on the paywall for every subscriber. Subs are growing about 10 a month, which we hope to accelerate slightly to double that rate. While we will continue livestreaming Gang recording sessions to LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and the YouTube embedded channel, only full comped paid subscribers get additional commentary, conversations and other material on the Substack app.
